2009-12-07 Luke Conclusion

Dear Friends,

This week we are going to complete Luke study. We started Luke Gospel on Sept. 16, 2006. It took us 2 years and 3 months to complete it. We studied it verse by verse, chapter by chapter. We believe it is of great worth and everyone not only learned from others, but also shared ourselves with others, enlightened others.

Fr. Olivera is coming and join our study on this Friday. Please invite our old friends who was in our study before for finishing the last verse of the Luke.

Here is our meeting information for this week:
God bless.

11/14 - The Resurrection

Dear Friends,

This week we are going to discuss the Resurrection of Jesus Christ ....

Luke 24:5~7
  • ... and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Matthew 28:6~7
  • He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going before you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.
Mark 16:6~7
  • ... And he said to them, Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He said to you.’
John 20:13
  • And they said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.

10/24 - Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.

Dear Friends,

This week we are going to discuss Jesus' final saying from the cross - Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit, and the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In 1 Peter had said: For unto this are you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow his steps. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Who, when he was reviled, did not revile: when he suffered, he threatened not: but delivered himself to him that judged him unjustly. Who his own self bore our sins in his body upon the tree: that we, being dead to sins, should live to justice: by whose stripes you were healed. For you were as sheep going astray; but you are now converted to the shepherd and bishop of your souls.

Why his death is so different? What is the meaning to us? Let's have a discussion and sharing in this week:

Dear Friends,

This week we are going to continue on Jesus Christ’s journey of cruel death. Jesus speaks to the Daughters of Jerusalem while they lad Jesus away. Why is He telling them to weep for themselves? Let us have a deep understanding if His words ....

It is time to select a new book from the Bible for our continual study. 2008-10-10: Jesus of Nazareth -- by Pope Benedict XVI

Dear Friends,

This week, Fr. Marvin is coming to our study and will give us a talk about the book "Jesus of Nazareth" written by Pope Benedict XVI.

Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Nazareth-Pope-Benedict-XVI/dp/0385523416

Some quotes from web sites about Pope's book:
  • "This book is . . . my personal search 'for the face of the Lord.'" -- Benedict XVI
  • From Jesus of Nazareth: ". . . the great question that will be with us throughout this entire book: But what has Jesus really brought, then, if he has not brought world peace, universal prosperity, and a better world? What has he brought? The answer is very simple: God. He has brought God! He has brought the God who once gradually unveiled his countenance first to Abraham, then to Moses and the prophets, and then in the wisdom literature–the God who showed his face only in Israel, even though he was also honored among the pagans in various shadowy guises. It is this God, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the true God, whom he has brought to the peoples of the earth. He has brought God, and now we know his face, now we can call upon him. Now we know the path that we human beings have to take in this world. Jesus has brought God and with God the truth about where we are going and where we come from: faith, hope, and love...."
Please feel free to invite your friends to join us.

Cornerstone Chinese Bible Study - 2008-09-12 耶穌被捕

Last Friday, we discussed and shared about prayers (山園祈禱) in Luke 22:39~46. It seemed that“prayers” always is an endless discussable subject that never runs out of our sharing and we always feel short of discussion time in our meeting. Most of us always discovered the new meanings, methods, and attitudes of prayers in our individual life. We might have one dedicated week just for "prayer" discussion. You can visit some of following web pages for your immediate reference:
Here is the information for this week's Bible study (09/12).
In our following meeting, we will start discuss about 耶穌被捕 and following subjects (starting from Luke 22:47).  Please visit: http://cornerstone-bible-study.blogspot.com/ for our study details. Our schedule is located at: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pZoGJjNOFo7bgMvjXKkgxGw, please select "2008 Q4 schedule" for our new Q4 schedule sign up or reference

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We will not have meeting on August 29 Friday due to Labor Day long weekend that most of our members will be out of town or have another plan. So, we decided to push our schedule down a week. For our next Friday (September 5th) meeting, we will discuss prayers. Even we had prayer discuss couple times in the paste, but we feel it is still worth to have a deep understanding of prayers and sharing thoughts following our study content, Luke 22:39~46. Lucia will lead us to discuss prayers and Thomas will lead the following discussion (Luke 22:47~)

Cornerstone Bible Study - 5/9 "My house shall be a house of prayer"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Here is the information for this week's Bible study.
The mental image of Jesus driving out merchants who turned His father's holy temple into a market place has always been a challenging message for me. Thinking of Jesus being holy and pious and mild, chasing people out of the temple and turning over tables is hard to imagine. I guess being charitable, nice, and showing love and support for those around us, does not equate to tolerating outright abuse of God's purpose. I see in Jesus an example of choosing and proclaiming God's desire above things in our lives that turns our soul and body (the very temple of God) into anything unfit as the the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit and a holy place of prayer and worship.

"Dear Jesus, just as you have taught daily in the temple having driven out the unworthy, come into our lives, clense us of all sin and make us pure dwelling places. Be with us every day to comfort, fill us with peace and joy, and empower us to do your will."

Cornerstone Bible Study - 4/18 "I must stay at your house today!"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Here is the information for this week's Bible study.
What joy Zacchaeus must have felt when Jesus spotted him from afar amongst a huge crowd, and said to him: "I must stay at your house today!". Just as Jesus sees right through Zacchaeus' heart, He knows ours too. Just as Jesus invited Himself to Zacchaeus' house, He also extends his invitation to each of us to let Him into our hearts.

"Lord Jesus, we invite you into our hearts. Come and fill us with the joy of your salvation. Grant us the freedom to lay at your feet every possession or desire that we have considered more precious than you."

Cornerstone Bible Study - 3/7 "Let the childrem come to me"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Here is the information for this week's Bible study.

How well intended the disciples of Jesus must have been when they turned away moms and dads bringing their children to be blessed by Jesus, indicating perhaps Jesus is a very busy man and what he is proclaiming carries such a deep spiritual message that even adults find difficult to grasp. Perhaps suggesting that they should take the children to be blessed by the town rabbi instead. But Jesus surprises them to welcome the children to be close to him, and went on proclaiming that it is to such children that the kingdom of God belongs.

Dear Lord Jesus, we know how much you love and welcome any movement from us to be close to you. May we accept our role as children of God and open our hearts with tenderness and seek all opportunities to flock to you like a child would do. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Do not forget your Lenten prayer exercise and bring the harvest of your prayer or your experience of the presence of God for sharing after Bible study.

God Bless,

Maria

Cornerstone Bible Study - 2/29 "He who humbles himself will be exalted"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Here is the information for this week's Bible study.

We are justified and saved by grace alone from God through the merits of Jesus, not from our own "good" deeds. Such is the theme of this week's gospel passage.

"Lord, how easy it is for us to be like the pharisee in this story, reminding you how hard we have worked to please you and expecting you to reward us for our labors. Give us a new and humble heart to be like the children, where all we ask for and desire is to be near to you and receive your blessing despite our unworthiness".

Do not forget your Lenten prayer exercise and bring the harvest of your prayer or your experience of the presence of God for sharing after Bible study.

God Bless,
Maria

Cornerstone Bible Study - 2/22 "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Here is the information for this week's Bible study.

In this week's gospel, the Pharisees were asking the question to Jesus of when the kingdom of God was coming, when signs were all around them that the kingdom of God was already in their midst. In own very own day and age, were there times that we also missed the very obvious movement of God in our midst? Let us not cease to ask God to reveal his love and the power of the Gospel to us and pray for a deepening awareness of His presence in our lives, our Church and our world.

Do not forget your Lenten prayer exercise and bring the harvest of your prayer or your experience of the presence of God for sharing after Bible study.

Cornerstone Bible Study - 2/8 "Your faith has made you well!"

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Here is the information for this week's Bible study.

Happy Ash Wednesday to all! and Happy Chinese New Year too. Lent is upon us once again. The beginning of Luke chapter 17 talks about faith in God and faith in Jesus Christ. Lent is a time to deepen our friendship and relationship with Christ to prepare to receive in fullness what he promises through his passion and resurrection. It is through this deepening experience that our faith grows. Do not forget your Lenten prayer exercise and bring the harvest of your prayer or your experience of the presenc of God for sharing after Bible study.

God Bless,
Maria
